Parkside Dundas has been running in its present form since 1986, when the two partners Richard Hollingworth and Andrew Hastie combined their businesses. Richard made plastic injection mouldings mostly for the electronics industry but had also started on his Parkside 4mm scale 00 gauge wagon kits. Andrew ran Dundas Models which concentrated on 009 narrow gauge models and had introduced the pioneering Dundas range of kits.
Kirkcaldy is well known as the birthplace of Adam Smith and where linoleum comes from, but to model railway enthusiasts it is the home of Parkside Dundas. At our base in a small industrial estate situated close to the main East Coast railway between the renowned Forth and Tay Bridges, manufacturing of the kits take place. Moulds are produced on a series of milling machines before being transferred to one of the plastic injection moulding machines for a production run. A special specification polystyrene is used which is coloured on site to the exact requirements. For such a large range of kits many hundreds of different types of mouldings must be stocked in sufficient quantities to meet orders ‘of the shelf’ and their storage is the biggest single use of floor space on the premises.
In the last two decades Parkside Dundas has continued to steadily expand from its foundation 00 and 009 ranges and has also added a small N gauge range as well as the ever growing commitment to 7mm scale O gauge. All this has to be juggled with the other work that we do. We continue to produce work for the electronics industry as well as commissioned work for various societies and traders in the UK and overseas such as to Sweden, South Africa and Australia.
For the future we will continue to produce kits that have wide appeal and which can be confidently built by the modeller of average skills but which are equally attractive to the most ambitious hobbyist. It is a challenge to continually improve the product but it is one that makes it worthwhile to be in the model business.
Railways are in the blood of the Partners at Parkside Dundas. Richard previously worked for British Railways and Andrew’s Great Grandfather was involved in the construction of the Forth Bridge.
