Tysley Locomotive Works GWR Weekend

The weekend of the 24th and 25th of October a Special weekend at Tysley Locomotive Works when they played host to two famous Great Western Railway locomotives. They were a King class locomotive ‘King George V’ and a city class locomotive the ‘City of Truro’, both were on there way from the National collection in York to take part in the Swindon Festival. They are both to be exchanged with GWR Star class locomotive ‘Lode Star’ and the GWR Railcar.

Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway Speed to the West

The Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway in association with the Heritage Railway magazine produced one of the best, if not the best railway Gala I have had the pleasure to visit. Their ‘Speed to the West’ gala over the late May Bank Holiday was a spectacular triumph.

I recall as a child the excitement of boarding a train to go away on my summer holidays. THE GWR truly re-created this experience for me again, with memorable trains such as the ACE (Atlantic Coast Express) and the Cornishman. With around thirty movements packed into a day’s schedule it was a very ambitious timetable, but every train I travelled on, departed on time. If only we could say the same of to-days modern railway.

Severn Valley Railway Supporters Event

Severn Valley Railway Supporters Event

Saturday 17th April at Bewdley saw the Severn Valley Railway Shareholders and Supporters weekend where signal boxes and loco sheds & works were open to the public. We caught the 10.09 to Brignorth and to our surprise it was being pulled by a class 20 diesel No 8059 on the teak rake of coaches. We had a very smooth ride and was soon in Bridgnorth where we alighted and saw The Battle of Britain class ‘Sir Keith Park’ waiting to depart with the 11.10 am departure to Kidderminster. She showed a very controlled departure with no slipping and in no time at all was into her stride.
